The Ultimate Hervey Bay Whale Watching Guide
Whale season on Australia’s coast is an unforgettable sight. More than 60,000 whales make their way up and down Australia’s coast each year, stopping in Hervey Bay for a rest along the way. Named the world’s first Whale Heritage Site, Hervey Bay’s calm waters are protected by K’gari, making it the perfect place for the whales to take a break. You can spot them slapping their tails, breaching, and even coming up to tour boats to say hello. It’s a sight you can’t miss!
When is whale season?
From July to October each year you can spot the whales in the bay while they socialize, rest, and play. For peak season, head out on a tour in August or September to spot calves playing with their mothers in the water.
Which tour is right for me?
Each tour is unique. It all depends on what experience you are looking for. For a smoother ride and fun on-board amenities, we recommend one of the larger boats. Some of these tours have on-board, gift shops, hydrophones to hear the whales, and even underwater viewing rooms. Smaller vessels are perfect for a more up-close and personal day with the whales, but be warned, it may also come with a bumpier ride! For those looking for the ultimate whale experience, a number of tours offer guests the opportunity to swim with the whales.
For those of you looking to fully immerse yourself in Australia’s native wildlife, pair your whale watching experience with a trip out to K’gari. Kayak through the mangroves and trek along sand dunes on a day trip or stay overnight and spot some dingos while cruising in a 4WD.
Most tours offer morning and afternoon tea, and some even provide courtesy pickups and drop offs from your accommodation. No matter which tour you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience in Hervey Bay!
What do I bring on the tour?
For the best whale watching experience, you’ll want to be prepared. Days on the boat can be cool and windy, so bringing layers can make your trip much more comfortable. For the boats that have shops and food for purchase, don’t forget your card or some cash. If you’re one of many unfortunate passengers who suffers from sea sickness, bring along some ginger candy and motion sickness medicine to make your sailing a bit smoother. Finally, don’t forget your camera to capture the breathtaking moments with the whales!
So, head on out on a boat and go see just what makes Hervey Bay so special. Most of all, have fun!
