Hervey’s: A New Reason to Stay in Hervey Bay
A trip to Australia’s East Coast would be incomplete without a stop in the whale watching capital of the world: Hervey Bay. The beachside town is the perfect place to soak up the sun while spotting some of the country’s most iconic animals, from the playful humpback whales to the gentle dugongs. For those looking for a bit more adventure, Hervey Bay also acts as a gateway to K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), where travelers can spot wild dingoes while cruising down sandy beaches in a 4WD. You can’t get any more Aussie than that.

The beautifully restored historic Queensland building highlights the town’s character while offering elevated comfort and amenities for guests. The Location
Nobody loves having to trek across town to do some shopping and see the sights. Luckily, Hervey’s is in a great central location for everything you could need during your stay in Hervey Bay. It’s just a five-minute walk to Cole’s and Woolie’s and a short trip to the bus stop, op shops, and local cafes.
A beautiful coastal walk is situated just across the road from Hervey’s. The path winds all to the Urangan Pier, one of Australia’s longest piers stretching out almost one kilometer into the bay. From there, grab some fresh fish and see if you can spot some stingrays or dolphins playing in the sea. If you’re looking for a more up close and personal experience with marine life, stop by Reef World, one of the world’s only all-natural aquariums and feed one of the resident green sea turtles.
Hervey Bay offers plenty of fun aquatic activities just down the street from Hervey’s. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, or cruiser bike from Aquavue for a day in the sun. During whale season, hop on one of the many whale watching boats for a cruise and a swim with the humpback whales that play in the bay. There’s plenty to do and see in Hervey Bay, and Hervey’s gives backpackers the perfect home base to explore the Fraser Coast.
